Chickens in our Garden: A Lesson in Lifecycles at Nurtured Nest

At Nurtured Nest, our commitment to hands-on learning and environmental education knows no bounds. Recently, our garden became home to a charming flock of rescued chickens, offering our children a unique opportunity to witness the miracle of life firsthand.

As the gentle clucking of hens filled the air, our children eagerly gathered around to observe the nesting boxes, where soon-to-be mothers patiently awaited the arrival of their chicks. This real-life scenario transformed our garden into a bustling classroom, where lessons in biology and empathy unfolded with each passing day.

The arrival of baby chicks marked the beginning of a captivating journey through the lifecycle of chickens. From the hatching of delicate eggs to the first tentative steps of fluffy chicks, our children marveled at the wonders of nature in action. Through careful observation and nurturing, they witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformations that occur as chicks grow and develop.

But the lessons extended far beyond biology. As our children cared for the chickens, feeding them, cleaning their coop, and offering gentle strokes of affection, they learned valuable lessons in responsibility, compassion, and respect for all living beings. Each interaction with the chickens deepened their connection to the natural world and instilled in them a profound sense of stewardship for the environment.

As we reflect on this enriching experience, we are reminded of the words of Baba Dioum: "We will conserve only what we love, we love only what we know, we know only what we are taught." Through our hands-on exploration of the chicken lifecycle, we are not only teaching our children about the wonders of nature but instilling in them a deep love and appreciation for it.
