Living Numeracy: How Mathematics Comes Alive at Nurtured Nest
At Nurtured Nest, numeracy is not something children sit down to learn.
It is something they live, notice, and experience every day.
We believe that young children develop mathematical understanding most meaningfully when it is woven into real life, through movement, routines, relationships, and the environment around them. Numbers, patterns, shapes, and quantities are not introduced as abstract concepts, but as part of how children make sense of their world.
Numeracy in Everyday Moments
Our days are filled with small, meaningful opportunities for numeracy to emerge naturally.
As we walk down the stairs together, we count our steps—slowly, rhythmically, sometimes repeating the same number again and again just because it feels good to do so. When it’s time to feed our chickens, children count the scoops of feed, noticing how “more” looks and feels different from “less.” These moments are unhurried and intentional, grounded in routine and care.
In these everyday experiences, children are not being tested or corrected. They are simply invited to notice, predict, and participate—the foundations of mathematical thinking.
Children as Researchers of Numbers
As we began the new school year, our four-year-olds took on the role of researchers. Equipped with cameras, they explored the environment with fresh eyes, searching for numbers already living around them, on doors, signs, objects, and materials.
Together with their class teacher, they documented these discoveries and collaborated to create a Numbers Wall. This was not a pre-designed display, but a living documentation of what the children noticed, chose, and valued. Through this process, numeracy became visible as something meaningful and shared, rather than imposed.
